Hi Lovelies. Today, I will be starting a new Monthly series called Successful Momma Series. Each month I will feature one successful woman who’s stories will inspire us all to reach for the stars. Starting out this series is Xza Higgins the creator of MommyCon
MommyCon is a nationwide convention that educates and brings together the natural parenting community. Which if you didn’t know is a big part of our home. We use essential oils, limit chemicals in our house, and try the homeopathic route before we use medicine. I believe that our children are delicate and they need time to grow and adjust to the world. I am so excited to share her story and how she started MommyCon and where she sees it going. So, lets jump in and say Hi to Xza Higgins.
1. What led you to natural parenting? Or was a holistic all natural approach always a part of your life?
When researching birth options I was enamored with the idea of a water birth. I read countless birth stories, and knew that I wanted to labor in the tub. The benefits of water birth include less pain, and a peaceful transition. The natural birth community ties in really closely with the babywearing, cloth diapering and breastfeeding communities. When I had a natural birth, I instantly felt connected with these women who shared their stories; and knew that I wanted to be part of a community of supportive, caring and naturally-focused mothers.
2. What is one tip for natural parenting you would want MommyCon attendees to walk away with?
MommyCon is all about creating a community for parents and parent-to-be. We talk about creating a “village” because it really does take a village to raise a child. Everyone is different, with different backgrounds, expectations and family structures. It’s important for parents to feel empowered with the resources and information we offer them. I would like attendees to walk away feeling like natural parenting is inclusive, non-judgemental, empowering and all about community. We are here to support not judge.
3. How do you juggle your business and family life?
Juggling my business and family life is a constant challenge. Some days I achieve it and some days I don’t! I have developed a very family-friendly work culture at MommyCon which really supports flexible working hours and working from home when necessary. My employees can bring their babies to work until they are 1 year old. This helped me spend time with my children when they were babies – I would bring them to work with me and fit my schedule around their needs. Now they are a little bigger, I have set very strict boundaries on when it’s “family time” and when it’s “work time”. My family time is sacred so I try my best to be present for my kids – this doesn’t always work but it’s good to set yourself expectations.
4. What tips do you have for other moms starting their own business?
The first thing to do is take a risk and go for it. Seek out a mentor, or advisor who will encourage you, but also listen to those that question you. Don’t let others crush your dreams of starting a business, but sometimes the hardest advice to take is to slow down. Well thought out ideas lead to stronger businesses, and the driving force of passion isn’t always enough to equate to success.
5. What are your goals for MommyCon?
We are revamping our website, creating a new merchandise line and bringing the event to more locations. Really exciting stuff!
